Basic Needs – Meet Sean

Empowering independence through United Way basic needs services.

In the early months of 2023, Sean, a Perry County resident and Army veteran, experienced car problems, an all too familiar issue we have all faced at some point in our lives. Sean couldn’t afford to have his car repaired and lost his job. He fell behind on his rent and was facing eviction.

“I was getting low on food and struggling to care for my son,” Sean says. “I needed help.”Sean called 211, a non-emergency line which connects people to local programs. Through 211, Sean was referred to Perry Human Services, which helped him catch up on his rent so he could remain in his home and focus on his future.

Perry Human Services and 211 are supported by United Way of the Capital Region to help people in urgent situations. United Way of the Capital Region dedicates more than $1 million annually to support services providing food, housing and utilities, child care, information and referral services and language support.

Thanks to help from United Way, Sean is now back on track. He purchased a reliable car and is working two jobs as a cook. He is grateful for the support of United Way and its donors.

“There is help out there,” Sean says. “You’ve got to pay it forward.”
