The Real Impact of Free Tax Prep Program: Meet Willie
Willie lives in Harrisburg and has been having his taxes prepared through the Money in Your Pocket (MIYP) program for the past four years. The program, also known as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, helps low- to moderate-income individuals and families with free tax services.
There are 16 MIYP tax preparation sites throughout Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties. Willie appreciates the convenience of the Market Square Presbyterian Church site, located in downtown Harrisburg, to have his taxes prepared. He can easily walk there, though he did save up enough money to buy a car last year.
Some years he’s gotten a rebate and some years he owed money. Willie expects to owe some money this year, but still counts the program as a financial win because he does not have to pay additional money out of pocket to have his taxes professionally prepared.
The fact that his taxes are filed correctly and on time gives him great peace of mind—that’s the main reason he returns to the program year after year and encourages others to participate as well.
The Money In Your Pocket program is a collaboration of local organizations committed to the financial literacy and economic stability of individuals and families working and living in our community. United Way of the Capital Region serves as the lead agency.
