United Way “Best of” Awards

United Way of the Capital Region created the “Best of” Awards to recognize the good work of individuals who are instrumental in the success of their company’s employee campaign. Honoring campaign coordinators, teams and companies, the awards celebrate the creativity taking place in the very best workplace campaigns. The “Best of” Awards is one of the ways that United Way of the Capital Region expresses thanks to those who promote team spirit, fun and cooperation while raising much needed funds to help those in need in our community.

The awards are divided into the following categories:

  • The Outstanding Campaign Coordinator / Team Award
  • Special Event Award
  • Best Video or Slide Show Award

2017 Award Winners

United Way of the Capital Region presented the awards during the charity's 2017 Celebration Event. All of the nominations received were outstanding, and demonstrated the dedication and hard work taking place at companies in the Capital Region. Below is a list of the winners.

Small Companies Category (companies with 5-99 employees)
Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry received the small size company “Best Of” Award. The organization created a “stars of giving” theme to engage and recognize employees for their giving and volunteerism. They held a kick-off luncheon, provided daily raffle prizes during their campaign and offered incentives to donors. As a result of their efforts, the chamber reached 100 percent employee participation for the 16th year in a row.

Medium Companies Category (companies with 100-499 employees)
Harsco Corporation received the medium size company “Best Of” Award. Each week of their campaign focused on a tenant of United Way’s work – school readiness, basic needs, workforce development and access to health care. Using this approach, Harsco employees learned more about United Way’s work in the community. Thirteen Harsco employees participated in Day of Caring and 11 new donors gave to United Way.

Large Companies Category (companies with 500 or more employees)
Deloitte Consulting won the large size company "Best Of" Award. The team created a Hollywood/Bollywood theme with the slogan – “play a starring role in our community!” Employees learned about United Way’s work through fun, inter-active games. Deloitte also held meetings for leadership givers and are among the first companies to help launch United Way’s LINC program. As a result of their efforts, Deloitte increased their employee giving and participation.

Best Special Event Category
Nationwide Insurance won the award for Best Special Event. The team at Nationwide decided to engage their employees by joining in a special United Way project called “Tools For Schools” to collect necessary school supplies for local kids in need. They posted flyers, sent e-mails and created “healthy and spirited” competition to see who could collect the most items. From pencils and tablets to tissues and hand sanitizers, the Nationwide team collected more than 6,700 items to support local schools.

Best Video
Country Meadows Retirements Communities received the Best Video Award. The video features Country Meadows’ volunteerism, engagement and giving with a fun flair. They show that for them, United Way is a way of life.
