United Way “Best of” Awards
United Way of the Capital Region created the “Best of” Awards to recognize the good work of individuals who are instrumental in the success of their company’s employee campaign. Honoring campaign coordinators, teams and companies, the awards celebrate the creativity taking place in the very best workplace campaigns. The “Best of” Awards is one of the ways that United Way of the Capital Region expresses thanks to those who promote team spirit, fun and cooperation while raising much needed funds to help those in need in our community.
The awards are divided into the following categories:
The Outstanding Campaign Coordinator / Team Award – Recognizes a campaign team or individual coordinator who conducts an exceptional employee campaign, demonstrating excellent leadership, innovative ideas, admirable increases in employee participation and/or per employee giving, and follows the majority of recommended best practices. Award is presented to three companies, based on employee size.
Special Event Award – Recognizes an organization that best engages employees with a fun and unique event. Companies will be judged on creativity and increased awareness of the campaign.
Best Incorporation of “We Aspire” Award – Recognizes an organization that best uses the “We Aspire” theme in their United Way campaign. Companies will be judged on creativity and increased awareness for the campaign.
2016 Award Winners
United Way of the Capital Region presented the awards during the charity's 2016 Celebration Reception. All of the nominations received were outstanding, and demonstrated the dedication and hard work taking place at companies in the Capital Region. Below is a list of the winners.
Small Companies Category (companies with 5-99 employees)
Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry received the small size company “Best Of” Award. The organization used a Pokemon Go theme throughout their campaign to develop friendly competition among employees. They also participated in United Way’s Day of Caring, Bridges Society and Women’s Leadership Network. As a result of their efforts, the chamber reached 100 percent employee participation for the 15th year in a row.
Medium Companies Category (companies with 100-499 employees)
Fulton Bank received the medium size company “Best Of” Award. Members of the campaign team educated employees about United Way and its work in health, education, income and basic needs. They also got employees involved in volunteer projects including a sock drive and making blankets for kids in need.
Large Companies Category (companies with 500 or more employees)
Capital BlueCross won the large size company "Best Of" Award. The team incorporated the “We Aspire” theme into every aspect of their work, resulting in an extraordinary campaign. They participated in Day of Caring and were active in the Bridges Society and Women’s Leadership Network. They also took home the coveted United Way Trike Race trophy. Special event fundraising efforts included a bingo night, raffle baskets and a silent auction.
Best Special Event Category
Deloitte Consulting won the award for Best Special Event. The organization utilized a “be a superhero for the community,” theme for their campaign. For their special event, they held a “superhero boot camp” and participants identified their own superhero name. All superheroes had to complete a variety of activities to test their United Way knowledge. Special activities were also held around the Bridges Society and Women’s Leadership Network.
Best Incorporation of "I Aspire"
Millers Mutual Group received an award for the best incorporation of the “We Aspire” theme in a campaign. The team replicated the United Way mural created in the campaign video. Members of Millers painted their thumb prints and signed their names to the poster. This incorporation of “We Aspire” was a great way for employees to learn about the importance of united way in the community, and how we can make a difference by working together.
